Learning Objectives
The course aims to provide students with the tools for studying history
of the ancient Anatolian civilizations in the II and I millennium BC through the analysis
of written sources.
Knowledge and understanding: The student will come to the knowledge of the main themes and phenomena of the Hittitology and to the knowledge of the main tools and methods of the discipline.
Applied knowledge and understanding: The student will know how to use sources, methods and tools for simple autonomous research and will be able to appropriately contextualize the studied phenomena
of the ancient Anatolian civilizations in the II and I millennium BC through the analysis
of written sources.

Course program
The course outlines the history of Anatolia in pre-classical era with a special focus on the civilizations who have left written sources, since the
beginning of the second millennium BC until the death of Alexander the Great (IV BC).
The course is divided into three parts:
1) Introduction to the history of the Ancient Near East. Archaeological key-sites (Gobekli Tepe, Catal Hoyuk, Arslantepe/Malatya, Hisarlik Hoyuk/Troia, Alaca Hoyuk, Kulptepe/Kanesh, Boghazköy/Hattusa, Karkemish, Gordion and Sardi). History of the research and the rediscovery of ancient Near Eastern civilizations in the twentieth century, presentation of the sources and the main writing systems (cuneiform and alphabetic systems) and languages, presentation of the key historical moments in the II and I mill. BC. (20 hours).
2) The collapse of the Hittite Empire: History, politic, social aspects (15 hours)
3) Elements of Hittite Grammar: how to rean texts in Hittite language (6 hours)
