Course Content
The course is about an introduction to the study of written records from Antiquity to XVth Century; it provides examples of the applications of palaeographical and diplomatical analysis of written records from the late Medieval to Renaissance.

Learning Objectives
The course covers the underlying fundamentals of the three disciplines (palaeography, diplomatics and codicology); it will provide an introduction to the deciphering and transcription of written records and a foreword to the scientific analysis of handwriting, books and documents.
Prerequisites
A basic knowledge of cultural history from late Antiquity to the Middle Age is a mandatory requirement in order to sign up, as well as a basic knowlegde of the Latin language.
A side note regarding the Erasmus students: a good skills in read and written Italian language is an essential prerequisite.

Teaching Methods
36-hour course. A very significant part of the course is made up of practical work sessions, whether reading and writing transcription. The digital representation of documents and codices that will be discussed during class are going to be available on the Moodle platform (available at this address: http://e-l.unifi.it/). Students are expected to download the materials. Considering the practical skills that the students are going to develop during the course, the attendance is mandatory (at least 15 classes out of 18).

Written exercises and oral exam.

Books, documents, epigraphs and scripts from the Classical age to the Renaissance in Latin West: materials, shapes and uses. Principles and methodologies of palaeographical analysis. Chronology and abbreviations. Transcription and analysis of written records. Principles of transcription.
