Course program
The course aims to provide the student with a sound chronological, geographical and methodological base in order to facilitate learning the main cultural processes and historical changes in the Ancient Near East.
The first part offers an overview of the cultural development of the area between the 5th and 1st Millennium BC, providing general knowledge of the key concepts and focussing on some relevant case studies. Specific emphasis is given to the study of formation processes of preurban and urban societies through the lenses of arts and crafts in relation to their use contexts.
The second part deals with palace structures of the 2nd and 1st Millennium BC in Syria and Mesopotamia, focussing on the functional analysis of the palaces and their relationship to the urban topography. Students, individually or in groups, will analyse and present a structure by using the original reports, in a specific chronological frame, in order to refine their synthesis abilities, their critical analysis of sources and their presentation skills.
